Mangaluru: Netravati river likely to turn dry by May end, rationing inevitable sans rainfall

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Apr 12: The water level in Thumbay dam that supplies water to the city and nearby areas is getting depleted by the day. If the city and its surroundings do not get rainfall soon Netravati river is likely to get dried up by the end of May.

At present the water level in Thumbay vented dam is five meters. Out of this 4.5 meters can be used as half meter silt is deposited at the bottom of the dam. In the AMR power project dam there is 17 meters of water above sea level and of this only four meter will be available for use. If the water situation turns worse then a small amount of water can be flown from Ruthwik project dam of Greenco company.

There is four meters of water available in Saralikatte dam that is lying below Uppinangady. This is not being used right now. The water is stored till Uppinangady and the water level in this dam will add up to another three meters.

At present, the water level in Thumbay, AMR and Saralikatte is sufficient. However, when the water is allowed to flow most of it gets dried up in the dry river. A major quantity of the water will be required to fill the huge craters that are formed in the river.

At present there is five meters of water in Thumbay dam. In a day or two there is a possibility of releasing AMR dam water into the Thumbay dam. Later, depending on the situation, water from Saralikatte dam will also be used. However, in spite of all these possibilities, if it does not rain, rationing of water will become inevitable according to MCC officials.

Same story every year. Better to work on seawater discellination plant. Also, keep praying. Must mak an effort first for alternative source source to produce water.

It's puzzling why our god/s fail to aid us in such circumstances, despite the prayers offered by individuals from diverse religious backgrounds, including Hinduism, Christianity, Islam, Sikhism, and others.

@sense _shetty; Simple logic per me: The Creator has created all the creation for some or the other reason and humans being superior and above everything have been given a freehand; now if they do all nonsensical, unjust, and demonic things and destroy his wonderful creation, how does one expect him to come to help anyone?? IF ONE CANNOT LOVE HIS CREATION, WITH EVEN FAIRPLAY, WHAT IS THE USE OF SHOWING FAKE LOVE TOWARDS HIM??

Do everything to conserve water. But don't lose heart. Storm heaven with incessant prayers and pleas. The merciful God will not let his children down. Just trust in Him and do your bit. God can send down pouring rain any moment!

With water scarcity looming every year and this trend getting worse (for over population and global warming), we should now redesign our homes/buildings in line with those living on small Islands in the middle of the seas or where there is water scarcity. All new constructions will have water storage facilities under the building, so when it rains the water from the roof tops goes straight to a basement tank, where it is filtered and purified for future emergency use.

@Don; Well said; but thr main issue is of adequate supply of clean potable water💦; for all other purposes, water treatment plants to treat sewage water can be set up as already being done in Bangalore! IMHO, they should put an end to further unnecessary, mass, concretization projects and start development of independent hubs in totally neglected places so that further migration of people is discouraged! BTW; just do a casual estimate of the number of very large educational institutions densely concentrated in a small city like this, and do a rough estimate of the water requirement and the already over-strained resources of safe drinking water; it's a myth that drilling more and more borewells are the solution to the drinking water problem as most borwell water is not potable without treatment as it's contaminated with heavy metals and radon... .?? Back in 1995, former World Bank vice president Dr Ismail Serageldin said: "If the wars of this century were fought over oil, the wars of the next century will be fought over water -- unless we change our approach to managing this precious and vital resource." The same grim predictions were given by three consecutive UN chiefs (please study yourself)! Please note that this is a very personal opinion (simple general views) based on my understanding of the subject matter; please don't believe in anybody's personal opinion without doing your own research and analysis!
