New Delhi, Jun 5: Prime Minister Narendra Modi tendered his resignation, along with the Council of Ministers, to President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday. A press communiqué stated, "The President has accepted the resignation and requested Shri Narendra Modi and the Council of Ministers to continue until the new government assumes office."
Sources told India Today that Modi is likely to be sworn in for a third consecutive term as Prime Minister on the evening of June 8. Although the NDA scraped past the majority mark with 292 seats, the BJP fell short of an outright majority. If the NDA forms the government, Modi will become the second leader after Jawaharlal Nehru to retain power for a third term.
Top leaders of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) are scheduled to meet this evening to review the Lok Sabha election results and discuss the formation of the new government.
JD(U) chief and Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, along with TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu, who is poised to become the next Andhra Pradesh chief minister, will attend the meeting. Key leaders of the BJP and its allies are also expected to be present.
They are expected to congratulate Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his anticipated third term and discuss the composition and character of the new government, which is likely to feature a larger role for the BJP's allies.
