Beltangady, Jun 28: A young woman was electrocuted while crossing a water-filled trench at Bargula in the taluk on Thursday June 27.

The victim, Pratiksha (21), daughter of Ganesh Shetty and Rohini, an agricultural couple from Shibaje village, encountered the accident. An insulator of an electricity wire had broken and fallen into the water-filled trench, resulting in Pratiksha’s electrocution.

Pratiksha was heading towards the main road, which is just 100 meters from her home, to collect an online parcel she had ordered in the evening on Thursday. A small trench, which becomes waterlogged during the monsoon, lay in her path. She was electrocuted on the spot. Her father, Ganesh Shetty, also received a shock while attempting to rescue her.

The Mescom authorities were immediately notified, and the electricity was cut off. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Pratiksha succumbed to her injuries on the way.

Ganesh Shetty, a daily wage labourer, has two daughters and one son. Pratiksha had recently completed her degree and started working at a medical shop in Kokkada.

RIP! Another young life snuffed out by somebody's negligence; third grade quality of equipment, sloppy workmanship & utter laxity of this utility company has been snuffing out innocent lives all over the place including their own linemen at frequent intervals; fail to understand why they cannot install safety trippers which swictch off the power in case of supply wires snapping; as of now in most cases some innocent has to sacrifice his life before they take action; pathetic state of affairs to say theleast; what can one expect in third world places where there is absolutely no value of human life!! High time all the next of kin get together & file a class action suit against this service provider!!

Earlier there used to be a grid sort of thing which would hold up any broken wires not letting them fall down. I believe cost cutting has made people working and walking below electrical poles very vulnerable.
