Mandya, Aug 24: An elderly woman who had been living by begging for several years died of age-related ailments in Mandya on Saturday, following which more than Rs 8 lac in cash was reportedly found at her home in Guttalu locality.

The deceased has been identified as Noor, a resident of Guttalu in Mandya city. With no support from her family, Noor had reportedly been begging at various places in the city for several years to make a living.

After her death, relatives and local residents came together to conduct her last rites. Following the funeral, relatives visited the house where Noor had been living and were reportedly stunned to find bags full of coins and bundles of currency notes.

Bundles of notes wrapped in plastic covers and large quantities of coins stored in bags were found in different corners of the house. Noor had reportedly accumulated lacs of rupees through begging over the years.

Several relatives and local residents sat together and counted the cash from morning until evening, with the counting reportedly continuing for two days. The total amount was said to be more than Rs 8 lac.

The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of Mandya East police station. Following discussions among local leaders, the entire amount was eventually handed over to Noor's relatives.

The discovery of the cash has also triggered criticism from local residents. "Nobody looked after the elderly woman while she was alive. Now, after her death, her relatives are rushing to claim the money," they alleged.
