Mangaluru, Jun 30: A poorly constructed private compound wall collapsed on a house, causing several landslides at Bajal Pallakere Ganada Bettu on Sunday, June 30.

The wall, which had collapsed three times previously, led to landslides affecting nearby houses. A local resident, Vishwanath, had previously complained about the wall to the District Commissioner, but no strict actions were taken.

The collapsed house belongs to Radhakrishna and was rented out. Fortunately, the tenants were not at home during the incident and are safe.

Jeethan D'Souza, a local resident, expressed sadness over the incident, stating, "This wall has collapsed three times, and we are thankful that there were no casualties. In the past, we alerted the District Commissioner about this issue, but no strict actions were taken. The low-quality concrete wall, built on a 10-acre private site, is causing the landslide. The residents of the house have been relocated to a nearby house, and the homeowner has decided to lodge a complaint regarding this incident at Kankanady Police Station."

Rampant vertical cutting of hilly areas and leveling of sites to build houses without providing adequate safety features (retainer walls built are only for name sake to fool the buyers) is being seen at numerous places in and around the Smart City; gullible people who have built houses on these sites are highly prone to landslides due to denudation of old trees and soil becoming soggy & loose due to extreme change in climatic conditions!!
