Udupi, Jul 1: "As journalists, we can change society through the little works we do. We should work towards the improvement of society while also making this field better for ourselves and the next generations," said Satyabhodh Joshi, professor of practice in television and film production at MIC Manipal.

He delivered these remarks during the Press Day celebration organized by the Working Journalist Association, Udupi, held at IMA Bhavana, Udupi.

Joshi shared his experience, stating, "When I was the head of the camera team, there were about 100 people working under me. Solving their problems made me feel no less important than any IAS officer. Work is more important than ideologies. It is crucial to identify and pursue one's dreams. Alongside working for societal progress, we should understand and fulfill society's needs. Together, we can march towards a changed and progressive society," he said in his inaugural address.

A special lecture on 'Role of Press in Police Investigation' was conducted by S T Siddalingappa, Additional Superintendent of Police, Udupi. He provided insightful information and said, “Today is a significant day for the press as well as us because three new criminal laws have come into force. The press focuses on what people want, but social responsibility is also important. The values of society are changing. The Legislature, Executive, and Judiciary are the working government bodies, while social media and other media forms hold social responsibility. Media personnel have the responsibility of shaping public opinion."

He further advised the media personnel, "Over-exaggeration of any issue or incident should be avoided. Certain rules must be followed for delicate cases, such as not disclosing names in cases involving children under the age of 18 or 14. In murder cases, any news published should not harm the character of the victim or the accused."

Rajesh Shetty Alevoor, president of the Working Journalist Association Udupi, in his presidential note, said, "The news pattern varies from one newspaper to another. Students should read Kannada and English newspapers every morning to understand the news patterns of different newspapers. This will also improve their vocabulary and knowledge of the language. They can develop a good command of the language by reading newspapers rather than news on social media platforms."

On this occasion, senior journalists Manjunath Shenoy Jannadi and retired sub-editor Jayanand were honored for their service. Children of working journalists who scored more than 80% in the SSLC and PUC examinations were also felicitated.

Reflecting on his career, Manjunath Shenoy Jannadi said, "I started my career with the newspaper Navbharat. From being a distributor, I began contributing local news and advertisements and gradually became a dealer for KMF. The risks I faced are countless, but my dedication brought me to this stage. I never imagined this honor. Today, I confidently say that waking up early to distribute newspapers on my bicycle is the secret to my healthy and fit body."

The event was attended by Dr Rajalaxmi, president of IMA Udupi, Indrali Jayakar Shetty, president of Badagubettu Credit Cooperative Society Pvt. Ltd., Ajay Shetty, managing director of Ujwal Group, Udupi, Arun Kumar Shiroor, Ajith Aradi, and others.

Nazeer Polya, chief secretary of Udupi Working Journalists Association, welcomed the gathering, Umesh Marpalli, secretary of Udupi Working Journalists Association, proposed a vote of thanks, and Avinash Kamath compered the programme.
