Mangaluru, Jul 2: Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre has announced an ambitious tree planting initiative and unveiled plans for a new software that will allow citizens to book tickets for all trekking points across Karnataka.
Addressing the media at the CCF Office in Padil on Tuesday, July 2, Khandre discussed recent developments: "During my last visit, I addressed issues concerning acquired land, and I'm pleased to report significant progress in resolving these matters. Veerendra Hegde invited me to an event honouring Salumarada Thimmakka, where we plant 26 lakh plants annually, with 90% thriving healthily. By the end of July, we aim to add another 12 lakh plants. We're revamping the outdated ticket system with a dedicated website for streamlined services."
Highlighting broader environmental initiatives, Khandre stated, "The Forest Department plans to plant 5 crore saplings, supported by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's commitment of necessary funds."
He also addressed ongoing challenges: "Despite shutting down manufacturing units, single-use plastic remains a pressing issue. We are raising awareness through information stalls in Bengaluru on World Environment Day, where the chief minister will announce the 'Parisara Prasasti' awardees."
Responding to queries about the new online ticketing system for trekking points, Khandre explained, "All 8 trekking points in Dakshina Kannada now offer online booking. Once our software is finalised, this facility will extend to all trekking points in Karnataka."
Regarding road conditions in forest areas, Khandre assured, "We are actively addressing issues within our jurisdiction."
Asked about speculation on his potential role as KPCC president, Khandre dismissed the notion, stating, "My focus is on flourishing forests and protecting wildlife. The position of KPCC president is currently occupied, so there's no point in discussing it."
Khandre's statements underscored proactive measures towards environmental sustainability and enhanced public access to Karnataka's natural treasures.
