Udupi, Jul 11: Udupi’s renowned Yakshagana troupe, Kalaranga, presented a special monsoon season performance of ‘Sri Kalyana’, at Kalaranga-IYC auditorium on July 7.
‘Sri Kalyan’ draws its narrative from various sources, including the Bhavishyottara Purana, reflecting themes of the Bhakti Pants movement from medieval times. The story symbolizes the intimate connection between God and the mortal world. In this allegorical tale, God descends to the earthly realm, taking a form familiar to devotees and undertakes a divine marriage ceremony. The narrative emphasizes the concept of devotion and the reciprocal relationship between God and devotees, where God commits to repay the devotion of his followers.
The highlight of the performance was the grand portrayal of the 'Venkateswara-Padmavati Kalyana Mahotsav', which deeply resonated with the audience. The concluding scenes included devotional bhajans and Mangal sung by devotees, adding to the spiritual essence of the storytelling.
As many as 50 stage and background artistes participated in the event.
M Gangadhara Rao, president of Yakshagana Kalaranga, coordinated the show. Murali Kadekar, secretary, delivered the introductory speech. Prithviraja Kavattaru meticulously edited and directed the narrative. S Ganaraja Bhat managed the staging, and Vidyaprasad contributed to the extended play adaptation.
