Karkala, Jul 12: Dengue cases are on the rise in many areas of Karkala and Hebri taluks, prompting authorities to implement preventive measures to control the spread of the disease.
Over the last six months, more than 50 cases of dengue have been reported in Karkala and Hebri taluks, compared to around 35 cases during the same period last year. Health officials have urged residents to remain alert and take necessary precautions, emphasizing the importance of not ignoring symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, and joint and muscle aches.
Residents of the two taluks, which are close to the Western Ghats, are particularly advised to keep their surroundings clean and to clear any stagnant water, as these are breeding grounds for mosquitoes. According to the Health Department, dengue usually occurs during the rainy season, and stagnant and shallow water bodies are especially conducive to mosquito breeding.
Nearly all individuals who contracted dengue have recovered and are back to health, while others have been rehabilitated. Out of the 50 plus dengue cases reported in the last six months, the majority of patients have been cured, and about seven are receiving effective treatment in hospitals. Authorities have ensured that necessary arrangements, such as medicine and hospital beds, are in place. Panchayat officials are actively creating awareness about the disease and preventive measures among the populace, highlighting that water in containers and vehicle tires can serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
Dr Sandeep Kudva, the taluk health officer of Karkala, conveyed that proper measures have been taken to spread awareness among people about keeping their surroundings clean and ensuring pooled water bodies are disinfected to prevent mosquito breeding.
