Mangaluru, July 15: Carmel School, Mangaluru, marked a historic moment with its first-ever alumni meet on July 13.

Held in the Carmel Auditorium, the event witnessed an impressive turnout of former students eager to reconnect and celebrate their shared heritage. The gathering aimed to unite as many ex-students as possible, welcoming them into the newly formed alumni family. As the alumni walked through the portals of the institution where their journeys began, they enjoyed a delightful reception and were greeted by puppets dancing to enchanting music, creating a heart-warming atmosphere.

The welcome drink and a portrait corner provided perfect opportunities for capturing memories and rekindling old bonds. Attendees enjoyed soft drink and registered themselves at the alumni counter. The presence of dignitaries, including Sr Lilly Pushpa, principal; Dr Sr Prem, administrator; Sr Premal, the vice principal; former principals Sr Cabrini and Sr Veronita; and former senior staff members: Veena, Lilly Castelino, Aruna, Nishal, Rosemarie and Gregory added a touch of nostalgia and respect to the occasion.

The official commencement of the reunion took place in the auditorium, beginning with a serene prayer service that included a prayer dance by the secondary students, seeking blessings for the gathered former students, ex-principals and mentors. The spiritual ambiance added a special mark to the occasion, setting a reflective and reverent tone for the event continued with a warm and hospitable welcome from Rev. Sr. Lilly Pushpa, setting a tone of affection and unity wherein each dignitary was honoured with a potted sapling, symbolizing growth and continuity. A captivating welcome dance performance added artistic splendour to the afternoon, followed by a presentation chronicling the institution's journey from its inception to the present day. The current students showcased their talents through music and dance, enchanting the audience with their vibrant performances.

Dr Sr Prem D'Souza, the administrator, delivered an illuminating keynote address that struck a deep chord with all the gathered Carmelites. She began by echoing the thoughtful words of Rabindranath Tagore: "I slept and dreamt that life was joy, then I awoke and realised that life was duty, then I went to work and behold… I discovered that duty can be joy," setting a contemplative and motivational tone. With eloquence and insight, she questioned the necessity of an alumni association, leading into an articulate exposition of its objectives: celebrating life and togetherness while building new connections, marking the milestones of the institution with greater involvement, crafting a collective ‘Carmel Vision’ for the school's future, providing career guidance and professional support to current students, fostering leadership, integrity, positivity, and gratitude, and serving as ambassadors of Carmel's enduring legacy. Each objective was meticulously unpacked with vivid examples, anecdotes, and quotes from luminaries like Dr Abdul Kalam and St Irenaeus weaving a rich narrative of wisdom that was both eye-opening and enriching. Her address not only celebrated the past but also paved a visionary path forward, leaving the alumni inspired and reflective.

The alumni meet reached a crescendo of inspiration as six distinguished alumni took the stage to share their remarkable journeys and achievements, marking this session as a true highlight of the event. The first speaker, Carol Pais, an advocate and life skills facilitator from the class of 1985, charmed the audience with her reflections on the invaluable guidance she received from her past principals and mentors, creating a rich mosaic of gratitude. Next was Akansha from the class of 2011, a graduate with a Bachelor's in Dental Surgery (BDS) who now practices at the renowned densure clinic in Mangaluru. The session was further enlivened by a mesmerizing dance performance by Shreya Das from the class of 2022, whose bubbling enthusiasm and energetic steps captivated the audience, perfectly capping off a series of deeply inspiring stories. Missed attending the Alumni meet. It was good to see a big gathering at the meet. Recognised Sr Cabrini and my class mate Cynthia. Carmel school was the closest English medium school then and we were a handful of boys in each class way back in 1975 to 1980
