Mangaluru: Acclaimed teacher, entrepreneur Benjamin D'Souza passes away at 75

Mangaluru, July 27: Benjamin D'Souza, a distinguished teacher and entrepreneur from Kelarai, Mangaluru, passed away on Saturday, July 27, at the age of 75, following a brief illness.

Benjamin completed his schooling at St Joachim School, Kelarai, and pursued his high school and degree studies at St Aloysius College, Mangaluru. He earned a Master’s degree in political science from Venkateshwara University, Tirupati, and a BEd from Government College, Mangaluru.

He began his teaching career at Rosario Institutions, Mangaluru, and later taught in various schools in Puttur and Milagres, Udupi. Alongside his teaching career, Benjamin embarked on an entrepreneurial journey, serving as secretary of the Bus Owners Association and chairman of the Lions Club Dakshina Kannada district. He was also a member of the Land Tribunal and Bajpe Mandal Panchayath.

Benjamin made significant contributions to the diocesan pastoral council, serving three terms, and held the position of vice-president of the parish council. Known for his involvement in singing, sports, and cultural events, he was an active toastmaster and emceed numerous events in and around Mangaluru. He was also the first-ever life member of the Catholic Sabha of Mangalore Pradesh.

He is survived by his wife, Violet D'Souza (Retd associate professor, Govinda Das College, Surathkal), daughter Nirmala D'Souza (senior manager, HDFC Bank), two sons: Benjohn D'Souza (chief engineer, currently working in Mexico) and Benoy D'Souza, and son-in-law Roshan Castelino (former manager, State Bank of India, Shivbagh). He is also survived by his grandchild, Rachel Pia.
