Beltangady, Jul 29: Health department personnel received widespread appreciation for their heroic act of carrying a pregnant woman on a stretcher due to a lack of road access, ensuring the safe delivery of her baby.
Vilasini (30), wife of Abhishek and a resident of Adenja village in Kaniyoor, was given July 20 as her due date. Local Asha workers reminded her of the date on July 10. However, Vilasini and her family members forgot the date.
On July 25, Vilasini went into labour. Health department personnel rushed to her house, but when they called for an ambulance, it was unavailable. With no other vehicle nearby, the health officials carried her on a makeshift stretcher to an auto-rickshaw parked far from her home. However, Vilasini delivered the baby before reaching the auto-rickshaw. The health staff provided first aid and took both mother and baby to the Beltangady community center, and later to Lady Goschen Hospital in Mangaluru. The district health officer reported that both mother and baby are safe and healthy.
District health and family welfare officer Dr Thimmaiah H R commended the health staff for their quick and timely actions in saving the lives of both mother and baby.
Health conservation officers from Padmunja primary health care centre, Shwetha, Sunita Hegde, and ASHA worker Kusuma, were involved in the operation.
