Kadaba, Jul 30: A young healthcare worker from Kadaba taluk has been in a coma for eight months after caring for a patient with the Nipah virus.

Titto Thomas (24), son of Thomas T C, a resident of Thumbya near Mardala in Aithur village, has been comatose since late 2023. Titto, who holds a BSc in nursing, was employed at Iqra International Hospital and Research Centre in Kozhikode, Kerala, since 2023. In September 2023, he cared for a Nipah virus patient. Shortly after, Titto began experiencing acute headaches. A scan in December 2023 revealed he had suffered a brain stroke. The next day, Titto slipped into a coma and has not recovered since.

The hospital administration informed Titto's parents that it has already spent Rs 40 lac on his treatment and cannot cover further expenses. The family has sought help from the Kerala government for advanced medical treatment. An appeal has also been sent to Speaker U T Khader. Titto's parents and his brother, who works for a private company in Bengaluru, are currently at the Kozhikode hospital taking care of him.

Titto’s brother, Shijo Joy, said, “We are dejected as we had hope that Titto’s health would recover. Now we have brought the situation to the notice of both the Kerala and Karnataka governments. If the Kerala government helps in getting advanced treatment, my brother may survive.”

Hope God takes pity on this selfless man who did his duty and is suffering for no fault of his own. May he recover soon.
