Mangaluru,Aug 4: The recent heavy rains in Dakshina Kannada have lessened, but Friday saw multiple landslides causing substantial damage. From 4 am to 5 am, landslides occurred in several locations, including five in Puttur taluk, leading to significant destruction.
Flood waters, which had inundated roads and homes, have largely receded, and water levels in major rivers have returned to normal. While the public has welcomed the easing of flood conditions, landslides remain a concern. The flood situation in Bantwal, Uppinangady, Kukke, and Subramanya has improved, with water draining from affected homes and highways.
Deputy commissioner Mullai Muhilan, who inspected the areas recently, has urged continued vigilance, especially on the Mani-Mysuru highway, which recently experienced a major collapse. The risk of further landslides remains if rains continue.
In Mangaluru, early morning rains caused a compound wall collapse at Gorigudda, blocking the road to Valencia. Other collapses occurred at Jeppu’s Gerosa School and Kavoor Shantinagar, causing property damage and flooding in low-lying areas. Many affected individuals, including migrant workers from Bihar, Odisha, and West Bengal, are staying at a concern center set up at Kulur Church.
Meanwhile in Udupi district too, deputy commissioner Dr K Vidya Kumari had declared a holiday for schools and colleges on Thursday, August 1 in response to a red alert from the IMD.
