Paris Olympics: Vinesh Phogat disqualified from women’s 50kg wrestling

Paris, Aug 7 (IANS): In what will be a major heartbreak for Indian wrestling, Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from the women’s 50kg event at the Paris Olympics after being weighed "few grams over" the permissible limits on Wednesday morning.

"It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you respect Vinesh’s privacy. It would like to focus on the competitions on hand," the Indian Olympic Association said.

Moreover, the Indian grappler will be placed last in the as per UWW rules.

Vinesh on Tuesday became the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the final of an Olympic Games after she defeated Cuba's Yusneylys Guzman 5-0 in the semifinal.

She started her campaign by stunning world No. 1, Japan's four-time World Champion and Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Yui Susaki, who was undefeated in 95 international matches, in her entire career as a wrestler.

Vinesh then advanced to her maiden semifinals after beating Ukraine's Oksana Vasylivna Livach 7-5 in her second bout of the day.

A former World No.1 in 48kg, Vinesh was participating in her third Olympics. She missed out on a medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics because of an injury. She lost to Vanesa Kaladzinskaya in the 53kg quarterfinals in the Tokyo Olympics.

Vinesh is also the first Indian woman to have won gold at both the Commonwealth and Asian Games.

Instead of that, our full contingent should with draw from Olympic and return back to India with protest. I think that is the way only solve this problem.

Assuming she ---- VINESH ---had given up and said no contest -- without going for weight check -- Claiming not well -- possibly would have got Silver ---- rather than disqualification by 100 grams -- now not even bronze -- also would have been better off losing and getting bronze at least ----- - but these are easier said than done --- nation joins in however saluting this Athlete / wrestler considering also various hardships -- horror -- facing govt machinery against her protests against the then Minister -- ----HATS OFF -- STILL A WINNER -- in terms of determination - -sacrifices --

Its really sad.. but even before this it turned ugly..when she qualified/entered semi her close collogues & opposition started to target Modi Govt on previous incident of their fight with wrestling chief.. till today no substantial evidence submit or found against him in court of law..but her collegues & Modi opponents not left even this Olympic event to target him..

No evidence does not mean nothing happened. Also we cannot trust our courts, just take the recent acquitted of home stay attack accused.

Shocked beyond anything. Rules are ok...everyone should follow rules. But this match is a final of Olympics which happens once in 4 years and players really go through lot of matches, pain, efforts to reach upto this final stage in such prestigious tournament. So my point is that, they should wait for some more time or a day to give her chance to reduce those few grams and then play finals. Disqualification on such temporary basis (few grams for some time) is not at all a fair practice. It will be huge injustice to the player, team & nation.

There is various stages for wrestling-50,53,57,62,68 & 76 as set by Olympic. These weight class set correct as for women's wrestling. Each candidate knows the set class and margin of weight they have to follow strictly. These cannot be varied. Last 2021cOlympic candidate participated at 53 kg class and now if you want to reduce to 50kg class candidate should obey the rules. Olympic committee has to follow fair rules set. Its the responsibility of the participant to obey the rules.
