Mangaluru: YIASCM organizes cyber crime, new criminal laws awareness session

Mangaluru, Aug 10: Yenepoya Institute of Arts, Science, Commerce, and Management (YIASCM), constituent unit of Yenepoya (deemed to be university), the department of forensic science organized an insightful awareness session on cyber crime and new criminal laws, with a special focus on the recently enacted Bharathiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 Bharathiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023; and Bharathiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.

The event featured a distinguished line-up of speakers and guests, focusing on the growing menace of cybercrime and the recent changes in criminal laws. The department of forensic science at YIASCM takes pride in being one of the select institutions to adopt a curriculum based on the bharathiya nyaya sanhithe guidelines. This progressive curriculum positions YIASCM at the forefront of forensic education, ensuring that students receive training aligned with the latest standards and advancements in the field.

Anupam Agrawal, IPS, commissioner of police, Mangaluru, served as the chief guest and resource person for the event. In his keynote address, Agrawal provided an in-depth analysis of the evolving cybercrime landscape and the legal frameworks introduced to combat these threats. He emphasized the importance of public awareness and inter-sectoral collaboration in tackling cyber threats effectively. “Cybercrime is no longer a niche issue; it has become a pervasive challenge affecting individuals, organizations, and nations globally. Being safe in the digital world is very important and prevention is better than cure. In case of any cybercrime issues general public can contact 1930," he added.

The session was further enriched by the presence of Geetha Kulkarni, ACP CCB Mangaluru city, Dakshina Kannada, who attended as the guest of honour. Kulkarni shared her on-ground experiences dealing with cybercrime in Mangaluru and highlighted the challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing such cases. “The Cybercrime control bureau (CCB) is now available around the clock to assist with cybercrime-related issues," she said.

Dr BH Sripathi Rao, honourable pro vice-chancellor of Yenepoya (deemed to be university), presided over the session. In his address, Dr Rao stressed the need for academic institutions to play a proactive role in educating students and the public on cyber security issues.

Dr Arun A Bhagawath, principal and dean of the faculty of science delivered a keynote address and congratulated the department for the efforts and initiative. Dr Shareena P, Dr Jeevan Raj, and Narayan Sukumara A, vice principals of the institute and Dr Reject Paul MP, head, department of forensic science were instrumental in organizing the event, which saw active participation from about 1500 students and faculty alike. The National service scheme (NSS) unit of YIASCM played a crucial role in the seamless execution of the awareness session.

During the event, four students from the department of forensic, Anova Sunil, Devapriya BS, Bhagya Mitra, and Shani KP were honoured for their courageous actions in a recent public incident. They were recognized and awarded for their bravery in helping a girl on a public bus by swiftly assisting her to the hospital.

The awareness session concluded with an interactive question and answer segment, where participants had the opportunity to engage with the experts and gain further insights into the complexities of cybercrime and the recent legal developments aimed at curbing it.

This programme marks another milestone in Yenepoya institute’s ongoing efforts to provide its students and the community with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the challenges of the digital age. The session was a great success with active participation of students and head of the departments and faculty members of the institute.
