Mangaluru, Aug 12: With a month and a half still remaining in this year's monsoon season, the coastal districts have already reached their annual rainfall target.

Typically, the region expects 3,101 mm of rain between June and September. However, by August 9, the area had already received 2,939 mm of rainfall. According to statistics, Dakshina Kannada recorded a 17% surplus, while Udupi and Uttara Kannada saw 20% and 42% excess rainfall, respectively. Overall, instead of the usual 2,268 mm by this time, 2,939 mm of rain has been recorded across all three districts, marking a 30% increase.

The monsoon entered Kerala on May 30 and reached coastal Karnataka by June 2. However, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts did not experience heavy rains until mid-June. The intensity of the rainfall increased significantly only after July.

In Dakshina Kannada district, Beltangady taluk recorded 16% more rain than usual, Bantwal 10%, Mangaluru 14%, Puttur 2%, Sullia 25%, Moodbidri 26%, Kadaba 14%, Mulki 14%, and Ullal 4% more than usual.

In Udupi district, Kundapur received 57% more rain than usual, Karkala 14%, Udupi 19%, Byndoor 26%, Brahmavar 29%, and Hebri 17% more than usual.

Last year, the coastal region experienced a 19% rainfall deficit. By August 9, 2023, there was a 15% shortfall. However, this year, rainfall has exceeded the average by 30%.
