Mangaluru, Aug 12: TLC Art Cafe is thrilled to announce a special book reading event on August 15 at 5 pm, featuring renowned historian and author Alan Machado (Prabhu). The event will showcase his latest literary work, ‘Discovering India Anew’, a thought-provoking exploration that challenges conventional narratives and offers fresh insights into the vast and intricate history of India.
In Discovering India Anew, Machado (Prabhu) opens with a profound question: “Where does one begin to tell a story that spans many thousands of years, a story whose origins are obscured by stubborn mists that will not lift and enduring myths that will not shift under the weight of ages of telling?” This question sets the tone for a journey that delves deep into the complexities of India's past, untangling the threads of myth, bias, and selective interpretations that have shaped our understanding of this ancient civilization.
With a masterful approach, Machado (Prabhu) embarks on a quest to re-examine the origins of Indian history. He boldly asserts that, stripped of all the layers of myth and subjective readings, the history of Indians has only one true beginning: Africa, about 200,000 years ago. This revelation marks the commencement of an epic narrative that spans millennia, tracing the evolution of India and its people from their earliest origins to the present day.
Alan Machado (Prabhu) is no stranger to unravelling the rich and often complex history of India. His previous works include Sarasvati's Children: A History of the Mangalorean Christians and Slaves of Sultans, both of which have garnered critical acclaim for their depth of research and insightful perspectives. He has also written a historical novel, Shades within Shadows, set during the period when Tipu had besieged Mangalore Fort, then occupied by a British force. The book has been the subject of more than one post-graduate research paper, the latest being a doctoral thesis. He is a keen student of Goan history, as his book ‘Goa's Inquisition: Facts-Fiction-Factoids’. Alan will also make a small presentation on this book.
