Mangaluru: Two arrested with 86 SIM cards

Mangaluru, Aug 15: In a significant crackdown on cyber fraud, the city police have arrested two individuals who were allegedly collecting SIM cards for foreign cybercriminals. The police seized 86 SIM cards from Airtel, along with two mobile phones, a Swift car, and assets worth Rs 5,49,300.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Shamadh Muhammad Samar (26) and Muhammad Azeem (19), both from Beltangady. Shamadh is a BBA student in Mangaluru and was residing in a rented house, while Muhammad Azeem was also staying in a rented house in the city. The two were reportedly procuring SIM cards from their friends and acquaintances by offering them small amounts of money, under the instructions of two others identified as Mustafa from Beltangady and Sajid from Madanthyar.

The accused have been engaged in this illegal activity since January and have reportedly collected and sent 400 to 500 SIM cards abroad. They were buying these SIM cards by paying Rs 200 to Rs 300 to their acquaintances and then handing them over to Mustafa and Sajid.

Cybercriminals in Dubai and other countries purchase Indian SIM cards to defraud Indian citizens. They prefer using Indian SIM cards because it helps them gain the trust of Indian victims more easily, making their fraudulent schemes more effective.

In February, Dharmasthala police had arrested five individuals and seized 42 SIM cards from them. It is suspected that the two arrested by Mangaluru city police might have connections to those involved in the Dharmasthala case. The investigation is ongoing to uncover the full extent of the network involved in this cyber fraud operation.

If Dhoni land and Nitish land can do, our guys are not going to fall behind; those with devious intentions will indulge. If there is only one weak point about Aadhar and its link to bank account is the identity linked to SIM and that which can be manipulated by hacking the server of service provider (Airtel, Jio, Vodafone, BSNL etc.) that verifies the identity and lets the rest of the mayhem. This practice of taking copy of Aadhar and PAN along with making it mandatory to fill mobile number needs to be stopped.

nah you are wrong.. a crime is a crime no matter who does it or whichever religion he/she belongs.... irony is that few news gets highlighted as the editor finds the name/religion of the criminal/accused more interesting than the crime itself...... this must stop and every crime must be condemned and every criminal must be seen as a criminal irrespective of whichever religion they belong (however criminal will never represent any religion whatsoever)..........

Imtiaz Mangalore,I give you right.Unfortunately names of this religion comes often in connection with all sorts of criminality more than others.I find their parents and religious heads should take care of this and teach them.Better to work in a lower loan section and earn money than such works.I have kindly note ,nothing against any religion.Criminals come from all sorts of religion. This SIM cards business I heard many times .They are sitting in foreign country, and print stolen cards copy and so give further to their partners .

I don't understand one thing: how do these people get such a huge number of SIM cards? The last time I was in India, it took me an entire day just to get a new number, with so many documents required. It seems like something big is going on, possibly an online scam? Remember the 'Jamtara' series on Netflix?

Most of the criminals stay in pg accomodation/rented houses, a close watch by neighbors and anonymous reporting may help in preventing/reducing crime.

Everyone should be cautious of cybercrime because these criminals are constantly finding new ways to deceive people. It is often the well-educated individuals who fall into their traps, losing millions in the process. If we do not catch and punish these criminals in time, innocent people will lose their hard-earned money.
