Mangaluru: Karavali Konkans pay tribute to Claud D'Souza with 'Hazar Salam Tuka' concert

Mangaluru, Aug 16: Karavali Konkans Bendur and the music community of Mangaluru commemorated the legendary singer, songwriter, composer, and dramatist Claud D'Souza with a unique musical concert titled 'Hazar Salam Tuka Claud D'Souza' on Thursday, August 15, at St Agnes Centenary Auditorium.

The concert began with a floral tribute to Claud D'Souza's portrait by his family members, Karavali Konkans, and the artists of the concert. The event was graced by chief guests Errol Samuel, NRI entrepreneur; Meena Rebimbus; Walter Nandalike, founder of Daijiworld; Joel Pereira, renowned music director; Sr Venessa, principal of St Agnes College; Marie, wife of Claud; and his daughters Maushmi and Melissa.

During the event, Christopher Mascarenhas, Joswin Pinto, and Leslie Rego, close aides and supporters of Claud D'Souza, were felicitated by the D'Souza family. Fr Joseph Martis, parish priest of Derebail Church, along with Fr Walter D'Souza and Fr Reginald Pinto, presented shawls and mementos to the trio on behalf of the family.

Addressing the gathering, Fr Joseph Martis highlighted Claud's nearly five-decade-long dedication to promoting Konkani music and culture. He praised Claud's ability to captivate audiences with his singing and on-stage persona as a comedian, noting that his heartfelt and meaningful songs earned him a special place in the hearts of music lovers. Though Claud is no longer physically present, his songs, music, and memories continue to resonate with his admirers. Fr Martis commended Karavali Konkans for organizing such a meaningful tribute.

Senior artist Dolfy Saldanha hosted the formal stage programme, while Ransom Saldanha of Karavali Konkans delivered the vote of thanks.

The musical segment began with a captivating verbal presentation by Leslie Rego of Bendur, who introduced the songs and singers by connecting them to nostalgic moments from Claud's life. Dolla, another close associate of Claud, joined Leslie on stage with his signature conversation style.

Legendary music directors Pappan and Joswin arranged the music for the show, with accompaniment from musicians Shabbir Das (Tabla and Dholak), Ganesh (Rhythm Pad), Ashith Pinto (Bass Guitar), Reuben Machado (Flute and Saxophone), Nizel (Trumpet), and Shaju (Violin).

Vocalists Rony D'Cunha, Ivan Sequeira, Galdin D'Souza, Babita Pinto, Munita Veigas, Alwyn Noronha Bajpe, Joel D'Souza, Shalon Pinto, Dr Musthafa, Kiran Menezes, Asha Menezes, Sharyl Tauro, Blossom Rego, Ransom Saldanha, Bindu Cutinha and Shanthi Pinto performed some of Claud D'Souza's golden hits. The dance troupe Show Snatchers mesmerized the audience with their innovative moves, with choreography by Suhan Surathkal and Remona Periera.

    I really liked the tribute given to Claud. Singers never die.It may be that their bodies return to dust, but their voices will continue to resonate in people's ears as long as this universe exists. People have not forgotten Wilfy, Jerome so how can we forget Claud? You will forever be in our hearts and forever in our Playlist.
