Bengaluru: St John’s Medical College holds protest march against violence in Kolkata

Bengaluru, Aug 17: Over 1500 students, post graduate residents, interns, nurses, and doctors at St John’s Medical College held a protest march on August 17 as a mark of solidarity with the country’s medical fraternity, and expressing outrage at the happenings surrounding the violence on medical professionals at Kolkata over the last few days.

The voices at this protest demanded that the safety of healthcare professionals is paramount, and measures need to be instituted on a war footing by authorities and decision makers to avoid such incidents happening in the future.

Demands for justice for the victim of the Kolkata tragedy were voiced, with expression of anguish and pain felt by the medical fraternity in view of the increase of such events of violence, especially against women.

The march was led by the director of St John’s Dr Jesudoss Rajamanickam, the associate director Dr James Charles Davis, the dean Dr George D’Souza and chief of medical services Dr Arvind Kasthuri.

As a mark of protest, the OPD services were suspended for the day from 6 am to 6 pm. Emergency services were however continued to ensure that needy patients were taken care of.
