Mangaluru, Aug 22: As part of National Anti-Ragging Week, an initiative by UGC New Delhi to curb ragging activities, Srinivas University Institute of Engineering & Technology, Mukka, organized the "Unite Against Ragging" (Anti-Ragging Awareness Mahautsav) in association with Mangaluru City Police.
The event was inaugurated by police inspector Mahesh Prasad of Surathkal police station and police sub-inspector Raghu Nayak by lighting the lamp. The program was presided over by Dr Ramakrishna N Hegde, dean of SUIET Mukka. Dr B M Praveen Kumar, director of Research at Srinivas University, and Prof Thrivikrama Prabhu, NSS coordinator at SUIET Mukka, were also present on the dais.
In his address, inspector Mahesh Prasad delivered a talk on "Anti-Ragging Abhiyan and Drugs Free Campus." He discussed the reasons for ragging, common misconceptions, emotional and psychological behavior, personality development, and the laws prohibiting ragging. He also emphasized the measures to be taken by colleges, the importance of a drug-free campus, and the need for psychological counseling in both anti-ragging and anti-drug efforts. Inspector Prasad highlighted the 151-year history of ragging, beginning with the first case registered at an American university in 1873. He also discussed the landmark Vishwa Jagriti Mission case and the formation of the Raghavan Committee by the Supreme Court in 2006. Inspector Prasad stressed the vital role students play in building a strong nation and urged them to respect and support their juniors.
Following the talk, faculty and students engaged in a discussion with inspector Prasad on emergency call numbers and helplines.
In his presidential remarks, Dr Ramakrishna N Hegde emphasized the need for anti-ragging awareness in higher education institutions to help youths become responsible citizens. He also discussed the legal measures practiced at the college to address ragging-related issues.
The program's convenor, prof Shrinath Rao, introduced the chief guest and guest of honor and served as the master of ceremonies. Dr B M Praveen Kumar delivered the welcome address, while Prof Thrivikrama Prabhu gave the vote of thanks.
As part of National Anti-Ragging Week, poster-making and reel-making competitions were organized for senior students to further raise awareness. The prize winners were honored on stage with certificates of excellence by Inspector Mahesh Prasad and PSI Raghu Nayak. Dr Prasad H M announced the list of winners. HoDs, members of the College Anti-Ragging Committee, NSS Committee, faculty members, staff, and students were present on the occasion.
