Mangaluru, Aug 26: Many young people are eager to secure good employment in countries like Dubai, Kuwait, and Abu Dhabi. However, cyber fraudsters are targeting these innocent individuals and coercing them into committing cyber-crimes.
The cyber fraud network, which previously conned people through social media and the stock market, is now luring youths into cyber-crimes under the pretext of providing IT jobs overseas. Officials report that more than 10,000 youths have become entangled in these networks.
Advertisements on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and other social media platforms claim to offer IT and software jobs in countries like Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia. Youth are attracted by the hefty salaries offered for these positions, and some agents are pulling them into these fraudulent networks.
Most of the affected youths are from Karnataka, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, New Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat. Upon arrival in these overseas countries, the kingpins of these networks confiscate their passports and train them to commit cyber-crimes.
Indian youths are used to con people from their own states, as the shared language makes it easier to deceive victims.
In Karnataka, 25% of the crimes reported in the past year are related to cybercrime. Despite efforts by the police department to raise public awareness, these crimes continue. Educated individuals from cities like Bengaluru, Mangaluru, Mysuru, Hubballi-Dharwad, and Shivamogga are among the victims, according to city police commissioner Anupam Agarwal.
The commissioner also mentioned that many criminals are shifting to cybercrime, as it is easier to make money and more difficult for the police to track down the culprits.
In this network, photos of attractive Indian girls are used to gain the confidence of men. Cyber experts note that individuals with limited knowledge of cyber activities are particularly vulnerable to these crimes.
