Mangaluru, Aug 26: While the old Kulur bridge has been undergoing repairs for a week, with a new layer of asphalt being laid on its surface, concerning issues have emerged with the adjacent new bridge. A large hole has been discovered beneath the new bridge due to a lack of maintenance, raising serious safety concerns. In some areas, iron rods are exposed as the cement plastering has worn away.
The new Kulur bridge, constructed in 1971, has not undergone any significant maintenance underneath since its construction. As a result, the plastering has deteriorated beneath the beams and other sections of the bridge. The constant movement of heavy vehicles over the bridge has caused damage to the underside due to vibrations, highlighting the need for regular maintenance, which has not been performed.
Particularly concerning are the exposed iron rods at the second pillar and third slab of the bridge, where rainwater has been leaking. It is believed that the failure to remove the mud deposited during last monsoon's construction efforts has caused water to strike the pillars with force, leading to the erosion of the cement plastering.
