Ullal, Aug 30: Kamala has been unanimously elected as the president of the newly upgraded Someshwara town municipality, while Ravishankar Someshwara has been elected as the vice president.
The positions of president and vice president were reserved for the Scheduled Caste and Backward Class (A) categories, respectively. The election was held on Friday afternoon in the Someshwara Town municipality hall, where members raised their hands in favor of the candidates.
Kamala, a BJP member and the only Scheduled Caste representative in the municipality, was the sole candidate for the president's post, making her election uncontested. Ravishankar Someshwara, also from the BJP, contested for the vice president's post against Congress member U Abdul Salaam. Ravishankar secured 16 votes, while Abdul Salaam received 7 votes.
Someshwara, which was previously the second-largest gram panchayat in Karnataka, was upgraded to a town municipality last year. Elections for the 23 wards were held on December 27, 2022, following the upgrade. The BJP, which has controlled local administration in Someshwara for the past 30 years, won a majority in the new municipality with 16 seats, while Congress secured 7 seats.
Kamala, who previously served as the president of the Someshwara gram panchayat, successfully contested in the municipal elections and has now been re-elected as president of the Someshwara town municipality. Ravishankar Someshwara, the newly elected vice president, has prior experience as a member of the taluk panchayat and is known for his dedication to public service.
BJP district president Satish Kumpala expressed confidence in the new leadership, stating that the 15th Finance Commission funds would be utilized effectively for development with the cooperation of local legislators. He emphasized that the funds should not be used at the discretion of individual legislators but should benefit the overall development of Someshwara.
The election was attended by former MLC Ganesh Karnik, BJP district vice president K Ravindra Shetty, district secretary Dinesh Amtur, and several other prominent leaders and members of the BJP.
