Bengaluru, Sep 1: Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw unveiled the prototype of the new Vande Bharat sleeper coach at BEML’s facility in Bengaluru on Sunday, September 1. The coach will undergo a 10-day trial period before additional testing on the tracks.
“Following the introduction of Vande Bharat chair cars, we have now completed the manufacturing of the Vande Bharat sleeper cars. The prototype will begin its trial and testing from the BEML facility today,” Vaishnaw announced.
The Minister examined the new sleeper coach and interacted with the railway staff responsible for its design and production. Key improvements over existing sleeper coaches were highlighted, focusing on advancements in speed, safety, and passenger amenities.
Vaishnaw revealed that the Vande Bharat sleeper train is expected to be operational for passengers within the next three months. After the prototype has been thoroughly tested, production will begin, with plans to introduce two to three trains each month after an initial production period of one and a half years.
“We are continuously refining the Vande Bharat design, incorporating feedback and experiences to make further improvements. This philosophy will also guide the development of the Vande Bharat Metro,” Vaishnaw said.
Designed for long-distance overnight travel, the Vande Bharat sleeper train will cover distances of 800 to 1,200 kilometers. It will consist of 16 coaches, including 11 AC three-tier, four AC two-tier, and one AC first-class coach, offering a total of 823 berths. The trainset, which can reach speeds of up to 160 kmph, features advanced safety measures, including crash-worthy design elements.
In addition to safety, the sleeper version will offer top-notch amenities such as integrated reading lights with USB charging, public announcement and visual information systems, modular pantries, and specially designed berths and toilets for differently-abled passengers. The first AC coach will also include showers with hot water to enhance passenger comfort.
“This train is intended for the middle class, with fares comparable to those of the Rajdhani Express,” Vaishnaw stated, emphasizing that the Vande Bharat sleeper trains aim to provide a comfortable yet affordable travel experience.
