Mumbai, Oct 29: Mumbai Indians (MI) have emerged as the world's most valuable Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, with an estimated valuation of $2.1 billion (around Rs 20,008.8 crore), according to a report by sports business publication Sportico. The report places every IPL franchise at a valuation of at least $1.5 billion, highlighting the league's remarkable commercial growth since its launch in 2008.

Mumbai Indians are valued ahead of several established North American sports teams, including the Detroit Tigers and Vancouver Canucks. Within the IPL, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) occupy the second position with a valuation of $1.85 billion (around Rs 17,626.8 crore), followed by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at $1.75 billion (around Rs 16,674 crore).

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are valued at $1.73 billion (around Rs 16,483.44 crore), slightly above the league-wide average of $1.7 billion (around Rs 16,197.6 crore). Delhi Capitals match that average with a valuation of $1.7 billion.

Among the remaining franchises, Rajasthan Royals are valued at $1.65 billion (around Rs 15,721.2 crore), while Sunrisers Hyderabad stand at $1.62 billion (around Rs 15,435.36 crore). Gujarat Titans have an estimated valuation of $1.58 billion (around Rs 15,054.24 crore), followed by Punjab Kings at $1.53 billion (around Rs 14,577.84 crore).

The valuations reflect the IPL's significant expansion since its inaugural season in 2008. According to the report, franchise values have increased by approximately 1,800% over the period, outpacing the reported growth of the National Football League (NFL), at around 800%, and the National Basketball Association (NBA), at slightly below 1,700%.

A major contributor to the IPL's financial strength is the central revenue pool managed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which is primarily funded by broadcast and digital media rights. Under the current arrangements cited in the report, each franchise receives approximately $50 million to $55 million annually from the board, equivalent to around Rs 476.4 crore to Rs 523 crore.

The BCCI retains half of the media rights revenue after accounting for production costs and distributes approximately 90% of the remaining amount equally among the 10 franchises. The remaining 10% is linked to team performance, providing an additional financial incentive for success on the field.

Apart from central revenue distributions, IPL franchises earn money through ticket sales, sponsorships, advertising and commercial partnerships. Merchandise sales and other franchise-related agreements also contribute to their overall earnings.

The report estimates that the average IPL franchise generated total revenue of $74.4 million, or approximately Rs 708.9 crore, during the 2026 season.

Another factor supporting franchise profitability is the league's cost structure. Player salaries are governed by auction-related salary caps, while capital expenditure remains relatively low compared with several other major global sports leagues. These factors help teams control expenses and maintain strong operating margins.

According to the report, some IPL franchises generate profit margins exceeding 30%, making the teams attractive commercial assets for investors. The combination of central media revenue, sponsorship opportunities, a large fan base and controlled costs has helped establish the IPL as one of the world's most valuable sports leagues.
