Mangaluru, Sep 2: The Konkani Natak Sabha (KNS) Mangaluru successfully organized the inaugural Gumta Gayan competition for various teams from Mangaluru and Udupi dioceses at Don Bosco Hall on Sunday, September 1.
The event was inaugurated with a lamp-lighting ceremony by Fr Rocky D Cunha, president of KNS, along with Santhosh Sequeira of Santhosh Arrangers, Stany Bela, production director at Daijiworld media, and the panel of judges.
The judging panel included Joel Pereira, a noted musician and movie director; Linet Pinto, a Gumot player; and a popular lecturer.
In his inaugural address, Fr Rocky highlighted the significance of the Gumot, a traditional rhythmic instrument once popular in the Konkani community. He noted, “Unfortunately, our elders did not pass down the rich culture of the Gumot to our generation. With the influence of Western and electronic musical instruments, we have neglected the Gumot. By organizing this competition, KNS aims to reintroduce the Gumot into our celebrations and cultural activities. I appreciate KNS' initiative and hope it continues annually.”
Stany Bela also addressed the participants, saying, “KNS is the only organization in the Konkan region with over 80 years of history in conducting regular competitions to discover new talent. Every year, it brings innovation to its competitions. The first-ever Gumta Gayan competition is a perfect example. This is just the beginning, and such competitions will help revive the Gumot in our events and celebrations.”
General secretary Floyd D'Mello welcomed the gathering and introduced the judges. Joseph Pinto, Angelore, served as the convenor of the inaugural event, while James D'Souza, Bondel, co-convenor, and Cletus Lobo, joint secretary of KNS, were present on the dais.
