Udupi: Govt withholds Teachers' Day award for Kundapur college principal over hijab row

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi

Udupi, Sep 4: The state government has decided to withhold the Teachers' Day Award originally given to Ramakrishna B J, principal of the Government Pre-University College in Kundapur, due to a controversy.

The decision to honour Ramakrishna with the state-level 'Best Principal Award' faced objections from 'progressive' groups.

The controversy dates back to an incident two years ago, when the principal enforced a ban on female students wearing hijabs, following government orders.

A photograph of the incident, showing students being stopped at the college gate, went viral and led to a significant debate.

In response to the objections and mounting pressure, the state government has chosen to withhold the award.

This principal will be like: ''kaige sikiddu baaige sikkilla'' now even if the govt gives the award back to him after so much drama, if he got ounce of shame left in him or self respect, then he must not accept the award........

This is a case of white-collar vigilantism, similar to the actions of cow protection vigilantes. It's a positive step that the government has withheld the award. However, I do not support the enforcement of veils or hijabs on religious grounds, as it represents a suppression of women's rights

Will the appeasement policy of the Congress ever stop ? It's vote banks are secure for eternity and it has to a adopt a ever encompassing nationalist if it ever wishes to come to power at the centre. In this case , the best principal was merely following orders. So why such shortsighted on behalf of the state govt ?
