Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi

Udupi, Sep 7: An oil spill from a tanker caused chaos on National Highway 66 in Kundapur taluk, leading to multiple accidents involving two-wheeler riders.

The spill occurred on the stretch of the highway between Kumbashi and Hemmadi Junction. Due to rain, the oil spread across the road, making it slippery and hazardous for vehicles, especially two-wheelers.

Several riders in Kundapur, Kumbashi, Hemmadi, and Koteshwar lost control, resulting in skids and falls.

The police department has implemented one-way traffic on the affected stretch to manage the situation and ensure safety.

Upon detecting an oil spill, the highway authority should deploy absorbent materials immediately to reduce the risk of skidding accidents while installing temporary warning signs and barriers ahead of the spill zone to alert and safely divert drivers. Simultaneously, road cleaning efforts should be initiated with specialized equipment to remove the oil from the surface. Traffic control authorities must coordinate to slow down or reroute traffic until the spill is cleared. To ensure preparedness, emergency response teams should be trained and equipped to handle such incidents efficiently, minimizing road hazards and preventing further accidents.
