Mangaluru, Sep 7: Mayor Sudhir Kumar Shetty Kannur stated that the tax on vacant lands within the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) limits increased due to the rise in the guideline value of vacant sites last October. A proposal will be sent to the state government to reduce this tax.
Speaking at a press conference, Sudhir said, "Earlier, the tax on vacant land was 0.2%, which was later increased to 0.5%. A meeting was held with opposition members to discuss reducing it to 0.1%. A proposal in this regard will be submitted to the state government. Opposition party members and the minister for urban development should work to convince the department secretary on this issue."
He further added, "Since the introduction of the self-declared property tax, the law mandates a 5% increase every year. During the previous Congress government, the tax was also increased. MCC has not received any grants from the state government for the past year, despite assurances from the minister for urban development. Transfers have become like a business."
