Mangaluru: Driving licenses to be suspended for traffic violations

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Sep 15: Police in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts are enforcing the suspension of driving licenses as traffic violations continue to rise.

Over 1,000 licenses have been suspended in the past year. Police have the authority to recommend license suspension to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) for any traffic violation. The most common offences include drunk driving, accidents resulting in deaths, overspeeding, negligent driving, driving in the wrong direction on one-way roads, and repeated traffic rule violations.

The suspension period varies depending on the severity of the violation, with a minimum of one month and a maximum of six months. The RTO issues a notice based on the police recommendation and then suspends the license.

In 2023, Mangaluru police commissionerate recommended the suspension of 1,400 driving licenses, while 900 licenses were recommended for suspension by August 2024. In the jurisdiction of Dakshina Kannada police, 285 licenses were recommended for suspension in 2023, with 197 recommended by August 2024.

In Udupi district, police recommended the suspension of 188 licenses in 2023, all of which were suspended. By June 2024, 92 licenses were recommended for suspension, with 89 already suspended.

Under Mangaluru RTO limits, 456 licenses were suspended in 2021-22, 225 in 2022-23, and 90 in 2023-24. Of these, 62 suspensions were for drunk driving. There are still 1,150 pending cases for suspension. In Puttur RTO limits, 127 licenses were suspended in 2023-24, and 50 were suspended by August 2024, with 110 more pending. In Bantwal, 125 licenses were suspended in 2023-24, and 53 have been suspended so far in the 2024-25 fiscal year.

There is no mention about suspension of driving license if vehicles parked on footpath. This is police/ RTO and others get second salary from businessmen who benefit from this violation. There are so many places in the so called smart city of Mangalore were we can notice vehicles parked on footpath and police just turn a blind eye.

IT STARTS WITH ISSUE OF LICENSE ...DL ... very easy to. Obtain one here in India ... .. All countries or most are very strict in issuing license especially USA. Europe Middle East and advanced nations ... So be strict. On issue Of license itself...... ...driving schools / training institutes Should be rigorously checked for competence as they ensure their client gets licenses ... .. Now present scenario ...Driving as per rules on roads / safety issues are of least concern for many drivers incl 2 wheelers ... We have highest road deaths and injuries .. a sad state of affairs ... nobody starts a journey. In a vehicle Expecting to be in a life changing tragedy ...other Medical costs. Maimed for life. Trauma ..within minutes or a few hours of travel ... ..So strict rules needed .. ...more have died on Indian roads then in wars ..... all man made tragedies because of negligence .. recklessness ... poor condition of vehicles ... lack of training .. Very few are actual accidents by definition.. meaning .. it was beyond drivers control ..

What about 2 wheelers driving on highways on right side track not allowing to overtake 4 wheelers as per speed limit driving.

Driving schools must ensure that learners understand the proper rules when teaching. Unfortunately, most driving schools are simply money-minded and do not care about instructing them on lane discipline. Secondly, both educated and uneducated individuals, upon obtaining their driving licences, behave as if the road is their personal property, driving and parking wherever they please. I swear, sometimes I feel like giving a good slap to the back of the head of those two-wheeler riders who occupy the fast lanes.

Under the circumstances our Mangalore traffic police do a very good job...I wish peope co-operate more and follow basic rules and don't have to be told by police everytime. The behaviour of all classes of people is pathetic at unmanned junctions.

Yeah surely this will be implemented strictly for 2 wheeler riders and small cars. The big expensive cars get away with everything! Why do we only see 2 wheelers and small cars getting caught at Bendurwell, Pumpwell, Bunts Hostel and other junctions? Has anyone seen a BMW, Merc, Audi or even an SUV being pulled over for 'checking'?? These fancy cars many times have underage college students driving, driving under influence, tinted glasses (pitch black tint) driving right past the traffic cop's nose yet you'll never find them being pulled over. So much for enforcement! Traffic rules apply only to the middle class & below??

"These are just talks. They will cancel the driving license and then give it back after 2 days, but they will ask for money in return.”
