Mangaluru, Sep 15: Dr Edward Nazareth, a renowned orthopaedic surgeon and esteemed Konkani writer, was honoured for his outstanding contributions to Konkani literature during a golden jubilee celebration held on Sunday, September 15 at Sandesha, Mangaluru.
The event, organised by the Karnataka Konkani Writers' Association, recognised Dr Nazareth for his significant work in health literature, short stories, and novels.
Stany Alvares, president of the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy, praised Dr Nazareth, stating, “Through his innumerable Konkani writings on health and his valuable books, Dr Edward Nazareth has educated people about illnesses and promoted healthy living. His heart-touching short stories, which depict the lives of ordinary people, reflect his deep empathy. He is truly a 'People's Doctor'.”
Fr Michael Santhumayor, principal of Milagraes College, Mangaluru, the chief guest, also commended Dr Nazareth’s contributions, emphasising his impactful writing on health, short stories, and novels.
Dolphy Lobo, a writer and editor, and Lavina Tara Mascarenhas (Lavi, Ganjimatt), a Konkani writer, presented papers on Dr Nazareth’s literary works. In his response, Dr Nazareth expressed his gratitude, saying, “I thank the editors of all the periodicals that supported me by publishing my literature and the people who bought my books.” To date, he has published ten books on health issues, five short story collections, and two novels.
The event also featured the release of 'Registananthem Phul,' a translated biography written by Flavia Albuquerque, introduced by Dr Joer Noronha.
Richard Moras, convenor of the Konkani Writers' Association, presented the association’s accounts for the past financial year. Rony Crasta, Naveen Bajal, and Swapna Crasta, members of the Konkani Sahitya Academy, were also felicitated.
Henry Mascarenhas welcomed the gathering and compered the programme, while Edmond Preetham proposed the vote of thanks. The event was attended by editors of several Konkani periodicals and prominent Konkani writers.
