Mangaluru, Sep 18: On September 14, St Agnes School (CBSE), Bendore, observed the seasons of creation with a compelling theme 'To Hope and Act with Creation'. This poignant message catalyzed both introspection and proactive engagement in confronting pressing global issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. The event sought to instill hope, faith, and purposeful action among students, urging them to rejuvenate and revere the natural world's beauty.
The programme commenced with an impassioned address by principal Sr Maria Sarika AC, who emphasized the significance of the seasons of creation, observed from September 1 to October 4. She called upon the community to engage in prayer, reflection, and concerted efforts to safeguard the environment. Her speech illuminated humanity’s profound connection to nature and moral duty to preserve it for future generations. This was followed by a symbolic human chain, with students personifying elements of nature such as flowers, birds, and animals, underscoring the deep bond between humans and the environment.

Teacher Lavina Peris warmly welcomed the attendees and introduced the chief guest, Jeeth Roche, a distinguished environmentalist, forest advocate, and social entrepreneur celebrated for his plantation efforts, including planting 4,000 saplings in Karnataka's state forests. Bhuvan, an environmentalist and wildlife rescuer, and Liston D’Souza, vice president of PTEC, were also warmly received. The distinguished guests were presented with floral bouquets. Cheryl Noronha, a grade X student, offered a thoughtful explanation of the symbol representing the season of creation. A moving highlight of the event was the symbolic release of a dove, representing freedom, alongside the unveiling of a bird’s nest designed to provide sustenance and hydration for birds. The establishment of a fish pond, stocked with diverse species, was followed by the ceremonial planting of a sapling, reinforcing the importance of nurturing nature and committing to environmental protection. Chief guest Jeeth Roche, Bhuvan, PTEC vice president Liston D’Souza, principal Sr Maria Sarika AC, vice principal Sr Meena Fernandes, and Sr Reshma D’Souza all actively participated in this meaningful ritual. Teacher Daphne’s recitation of the poem further underscored the school’s dedication to environmental conservation and stewardship.
The event began with the lighting of a lamp, symbolizing the inauguration of the seasons of creation. Students contributed with a series of engaging performances: a Nukkad Natak (street play) vividly portrayed contemporary environmental crises, a solemn invocation acknowledged the divine gift of creation, a vibrant welcome dance celebrated the harmony and beauty of the natural world, and a powerful mime performance conveyed the urgency of environmental issues without words. melodious song dedicated to nature rekindled a profound sense of reverence for the planet. In his keynote address, Roche provided valuable insights into environmental conservation, encouraging students to adopt sustainable practices. He highlighted Japan’s meticulous waste management system, which categorizes waste into 18 distinct types, and advocated for a simplified four-way waste segregation system- e-waste, hazardous waste, dry waste, and wet waste. He also praised Kerala's innovative waste disposal practices, where dry waste is collected weekly and wet waste is composted at home, urging Mangaluru to implement similar measures. The event also celebrated students who had excelled in Karate, adding a festive touch.
The programme concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by teacher Reena, expressing gratitude to all who contributed to the event’s success. Teacher Josephine skillfully anchored the proceedings, ensuring a smooth and engaging experience for all attendees.
This celebration not only heightened awareness of environmental issues but also fostered a profound sense of responsibility among participants, inspiring them to undertake tangible actions towards environmental conservation and the creation of a sustainable future.
