London, Nov 22 (IANS): "Breaking Dawn Part 1", the first instalment of the final chapter of the vampire saga, has the set the cash registers ringing by collecting $291 million at the global box office.
The film is topping the charts in Britain with a box office earning of 13.9 million pounds.
This is the biggest opening for an American film in Britian, reports femalefirst.co.uk, adding that it has also surpassed "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1" as the biggest non-3D Friday opening movie.
Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner starrer film has hit theatres Nov 18 and looks set to go on and be one of the biggest movies of 2011.
Twilight movie series is an adaptation of vampire-themed fantasy romance novels by American author Stephenie Meyer. First in the series titled "Twilight" was released in 2008 and it was followed by "New Moon" and "Eclipse" and all the instalments did a roaring business at the box office.
