Udupi, Oct 4: Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Manipal, celebrated the highly anticipated launch of Essentials of Ophthalmology: as per the Indian competency-based medical curriculum. The launch held on October 4 at the Interact Lecture Hall GB on the KMC campus, marked an important milestone in medical education and ophthalmology.
Published by Wolters Kluwer, the textbook is authored by Dr Sulatha V Bhandary, Dr Vijaya Pai H, Dr Lavanya G Rao, and Dr Uma Kulkarni, and serves as a comprehensive resource for undergraduate students. Offering essential insights into both the theory and practice of ophthalmology, the book is expected to become a key reference for students and medical professionals alike.
The authors are highly regarded in their respective fields, holding significant roles at institutions such as Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal, and Yenepoya Medical College, Mangaluru.
The event was graced by Dr Sharath Kumar Rao, pro vice chancellor of health sciences at Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), as the chief guest. Joining him were Dr Padmaraj Hegde, dean of Kasturba Medical College, and Dr Shailaja, professor and in-charge head of the department of ophthalmology at KMC, Manipal. The authors of the textbook were also present to share in the celebration.
In his speech, Dr Padmaraj Hegde, who officially launched the e-book version of Essentials of Ophthalmology: as per the Indian competency-based medical curriculum, said, "This book is a testament to the hard work and expertise of our faculty. It fills a crucial gap in undergraduate medical education, providing practical and theoretical insights that will guide students through their journey in ophthalmology."
Following this, Dr Sharath Kumar Rao launched the hardcopy of the textbook, expressing his pride in the achievement. "The release of this textbook represents a significant milestone, not only for KMC but for the entire academic community in ophthalmology. The clarity, comprehensive coverage, and practical approach of this book will ensure that our students are well-prepared for both their academic and clinical roles and wished the authors success and expressed hope that the book would reach an international audience, helping students worldwide. MAHE is proud of the authors and will always support such endeavors," he added.
The programme began with a welcome address, followed by an insightful overview of the textbook by Dr Sulatha V Bhandary, professor and unit head of the department of ophthalmology at KMC, Manipal. She discussed the motivation behind writing the book and provided an in-depth look into its content. Dr Bhandary highlighted how the book bridges the gap between theoretical learning and practical application, offering students the tools they need for success in ophthalmic care.
As part of the event, a ceremonial handover of the textbook to the KMC library and to the department of ophthalmology was conducted by Dr Shailaja, underscoring the significance of this academic resource for future students.
The authors also shared their experiences in writing the textbook. Dr Vijaya Pai H, Dr Lavanya G Rao, and Dr Uma Kulkarni each spoke about their contributions to the book and the collaborative nature of the project. They emphasized the textbook's relevance to modern medical education and how it addresses the evolving needs of ophthalmology students.
The event was smoothly hosted by Dr Manali Hazarika, associate professor at Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal, who served as the master of ceremonies.
