Mangaluru, Oct 7: Several parts of Dakshina Kannada (DK) district were hit by heavy rains, accompanied by thunder and lightning, on Sunday evening, causing significant damage in various areas.
The downpour affected regions including Puttur, Bellare, Sullia, Uppinangady, Beltangady, and Mangaluru. In Mangaluru, an artificial flood formed under the Pumpwell flyover, submerging low-lying areas like Bajal. Vehicular movement slowed due to large water-filled potholes on the highway.
In Bantwal, a house was damaged by a lightning strike, while a coconut tree fell on a house in Narikombu, damaging its roof tiles. In Kepu village, the house of Jayarama Naika sustained cracks in the walls due to lightning.
In Sullia and Bellare, heavy rainfall flooded roads, with sewage water causing inconvenience in Bellare. The Gauri rivulet overflowed, cutting off the road between Bellare and Savanoor.
In Puttur, traffic was disrupted on the Bellare-Peruvaje-Savanoor road due to the overflowing Gauri rivulet. The mud compound wall of Mahabala Rai in Koltige village cracked, damaging solar equipment used for drying arecanut. A grocery shop owned by Ismail Haji in Kaudichhar was flooded, soaking most of the items. Rainwater also entered a chicken center in Perlampady town, prompting the relocation of hundreds of chickens to safer ground.
