Mangaluru, Oct 16: A high alert has been issued for Dakshina Kannada (DK) district from October 16 to 19 due to heavy rainfall and strong sea waves expected in the coming days. Following a brief lull, the monsoon has returned with renewed intensity across the state, with many regions, including the coastal areas, witnessing heavy rainfall.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of increased rainfall due to a low-pressure system. In light of this, the Dakshina Kannada district administration has instructed fishermen to refrain from venturing into the sea. Additionally, the public and tourists are advised to avoid low-lying and waterlogged areas.
Rainfall has already caused disruption in Bengaluru, where the city has seen consistent downpours for the past 18 hours, leading to flooding in many areas and a 6-degree drop in temperature. Roads have turned into rivers, and water has entered several homes, causing significant inconvenience.
In the coastal region, moderate rainfall has been observed over the past two days, with a forecast for heavy rainfall over the next four to five days. The IMD has issued warnings for various districts, with an orange alert in place for Tumakuru, Hassan, Shivamogga, and Chikkamagaluru on Wednesday (October 16). Yellow alerts have been issued for Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Bengaluru (urban and rural), Chitradurga, Davanagere, Kodagu, Kolar, Mandya, and Ramanagara districts.
The following day, Thursday (October 17), an orange alert is set for Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Bengaluru, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kolar, Mandya, Ramanagara, Shivamogga, and Tumakuru districts, while a yellow alert is issued for districts including Vijayanagara, Mysuru, Kodagu, Davanagere, Chitradurga, Chamarajanagar, Ballari, Haveri, Gadag, Dharwad, and Uttara Kannada.
Bengaluru has particularly felt the impact, with non-stop rains flooding roads and homes, causing major traffic jams throughout the city. Residents have faced severe disruptions, with office-goers and school children struggling to navigate the waterlogged streets since the early hours of the day.
