Ajman: Gulf Medical University Holds Third Annual Scientific Meeting

Ajman, Dec 2: The Third Annual Scientific Meeting, 2011 was held on the November 29 and 30 at the Gulf Medical University, Ajman. This year the Scientific Meeting has offered a bouquet of scientific papers in the form of oral and poster presentations represented by the clinical, biomedical, dental, physical therapy and pharmaceutical sciences faculty and students.

The presentations were delivered under the themes: basic sciences, medical education, non-communicable diseases, diseases of the head and neck, physical therapy in clinical practice, maternal and child health, pharmacotherapeutics and alternative medicine. The papers covered various topics related mainly to diabetes, student’s education and career, professional practice, drugs and polypharmacy and case reports among others.

Prof Jayadevan Sreedharan, Chairman of the Scientific Committee said that the aim of the scientific meeting was to mainly to create a research environment amongst the students and faculty in GMU. “It gives opportunity to faculty and students to discuss and debate on various topics of national priority, thought provoking sessions that could pave way for further research in prioritized areas”, he added.

Prof Gita Ashok Raj also mentioned that the Gulf Medical University is getting ready to launch its own e-journal in the near future. “We hope that it will serve as an additional platform for publishing the best papers presented at these in-house scientific sessions. This journal would also invite contributions from scientists and faculty from various universities and institutions from all over the world”, she added.

Out of a total 80 papers, 45 oral papers and 35 poster presentations were presented in the Scientific Meeting. Provost Prof Gita Ashok Raj gave away 10 Best Oral Paper Awards and 4 Best Poster Awards to the winners of the event. Prof Mawahib A S Al Biat was adjudged as the winner of Overall Best Paper - Oral while Anas Javed (student) was declared winner for the Overall Best Paper- Poster).

While extending his heartfelt thanks on behalf of the Scientific Committee to the Founder President Thumbay Moideen for his encouragement and support in hosting the prestigious event, Jayadevan also thanked Provost. Prof Gita Ashok Raj for initiating the idea, all the Scientific Committee members, reviewers, session chairs for keeping the conference on track, Deans and faculty of all colleges for their involvement, Health Communications Divisions, I.T and Promotions for their technical and operational assistance in organizing the scientific event and release of the proceedings, Dr I G Premadasa for meticulously editing the document.

On the sidelines of the event Prof Gita Ashok Raj said, “We are truly developing into a large scientific community representing all branches of medicine and allied health sciences. This will surely pave the way for the university to fulfill its mission to produce healthcare professionals who will integrate the advances in research with the best clinical practices and in turn through the pursuit of excellence in medical education, biomedical research and healthcare to become a leading contributor to the continuous improvement of the nation’s health care delivery system as spelt out in the vision statement of Gulf Medical University”.
