Mangaluru International Airport successfully conducts FSAE exercise

Media Release

Mangaluru, Oct 18: Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) successfully conducted the annual full scale aerodrome emergency exercise (FSAEE), Mangalam 2024 on Friday, October 18. This critical event, held in alignment with regulatory authorities and the Dakshina Kannada District Disaster Management Plan, aimed to test the airport's emergency response capabilities and inter-agency coordination.

The exercise simulated a scenario where a flight from Dubai with 150 passengers experienced a tyre burst on landing, veered off the runway and came to a stop at the intersection of taxiways J & D and burst into flames.

"This realistic simulation allowed us to evaluate preparedness and response strategies in handling such emergencies," the statement said.

Key stakeholders, including the district administration, various private and government hospitals, CISF, Karnataka State Police, Airport Health Organisation, Bureau of Immigration, Customs, SDRF, Karnataka Fire and Emergency Services, and various internal teams, actively participated in the exercise, ensuring a comprehensive and coordinated response. Their dedication and collaboration are crucial in maintaining the highest standards of safety and security at the airport.

The MIA authorities have extended their heartfelt thanks to all participants for their unwavering support and commitment to enhancing the airport's emergency preparedness. These efforts play a vital role in ensuring the safety and well-being of all passengers and staff at Mangaluru International Airport.

Oh Please! Conducting tests are good. But here are few key important points: 1. Time of the exercise is not just how long the number of ambulances reached the flight runway, but X2+ as the time to be noted by meeting the emergency department at the local hospitals. 2. How is the situation controlled for entries and exists if ambulance w. r. t security processes? (To restrict unauthorized entries, and quick approvals). 3. Are there sufficient stretchers, first aiders, support staffs to handle emergency situations? And are they trained periodically? 4. How is the road traffic management controlled, when traffic is blocked during peak hours? 5. Is there a process to divert the hospital location for deceased personnels for identification by their loved ones, to control and ease the situation, from that of those who are alive and under treatment? Thereby increasing hospital securities to control situations from unnecessary general public distractions. Etc and many more.

Emergency HSE exercises always keep the duty staff ever ready to meet critical challenges. I suggest that surprise exercises without notice must also be conducted from time to time. Great

"I have also done such an exercise at Bahrain International Airport. But in India, when flight accidents happen, passengers get scared, and someone's heart starts beating fast. The biggest task is to calm the passengers and get them out of fear, because as they say, 'He who is afraid is dead.'"
