Belagavi, Oct 20: A woman from Mantoora village in Rayabaga taluk of Belagavi district has become a role model by opening a library for students preparing for competitive exams.
Thousands of people have benefited from the Grihalakshmi scheme, one of the flagship programs of the state Congress government. Recently, a woman made headlines by serving the traditional sweet dish Holige to the entire village, earning congratulations from CM Siddaramaiah.
Others have used the funds for various purposes: a mother-in-law set up a fancy shop for her daughter-in-law, another woman paid for her husband’s eye surgery, and one bought a bike for her son. However, in Mantoora village, Mallavva Bheemappa Meti has set an example by using the funds to establish a library.
Meti, a grama panchayat member, shared her initiative on social media, saying, "I have opened a library in my village for students preparing for competitive exams" and urged them to make good use of it.
Meti revealed that she spent Rs 1.5 lac on the library, using her grama panchayat allowances along with Rs 26,000 from the Grihalakshmi fund. She explained, "Students from my village often go to other districts to study for competitive exams. I wanted to provide them with a resource in the village for their convenience."
Meti’s post on X (formerly Twitter) has drawn both praise and criticism from netizens.
