Mangaluru/Udupi, Nov 1: Heavy rain lashed various parts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on Thursday evening.

The day started with hot and humid weather, but as evening approached, clouds gathered, bringing rain with thunder and lightning in several areas. Beltangady taluk, along with Sullia and Puttur, experienced heavy rainfall.

In Beltangady, rain lasted for about half an hour, causing water to flow across roads, making them slippery. Some areas also received rain later at night. A house belonging to Saramma in Kakkinje collapsed, with its roof and wall damaged. Fortunately, there were no fatalities as the house was unoccupied during the incident.

Udupi also saw rain with thunder and lightning in the evening, affecting those who were out buying firecrackers for Deepavali. Firecracker stalls and flower vendors faced inconvenience due to the sudden downpour. Rainfall extended to Kundapur, Brahmavar, Kaup, and Karkala, with heavy rain inundating roads in Hebri. Many people celebrating Deepavali struggled to keep their mud lamps lit in paddy fields due to the rain.

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Dakshina Kannada and Udupi on Friday and Saturday, predicting light to moderate rain across Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada during this period.
