Mangaluru: Falnir Vas lane residents threaten protest over drainage, mosquito menace

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Nov 8: Despite being among the highest taxpayers to the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), the residents of Falnir Vas Lane are suffering due to the negligence of the administration. The area has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other diseases, making daily life difficult for the locals. The residents have threatened to stage a protest in front of the MCC if their issues are not addressed.

Speaking about the problems faced by the residents, Mohammed Aftaar Hussain said, “The silt removed from the underground drainage in the Vas Lane area five years ago was piled up on the roadside and is yet to be cleared. One end of the area stinks due to wastewater flowing from Kankanady Market, while the other end suffers from wastewater discharge from apartment buildings. This has turned the entire area into a breeding ground for mosquitoes, and residents are unable to sleep peacefully.”

Abdul Khader Khaizer added, “Despite paying high taxes to the MCC, we face numerous problems. The stormwater drain in front of the hospital, meant for rainwater, is now filled with wastewater from apartment buildings. Although we have reported this issue to the local corporator, no action has been taken. We have been dealing with these problems for five years, and the work remains incomplete.”

Dr Vasant Shetty commented, “The road development in Vas Lane seems to have been done solely for vehicle parking. Ambulances cannot reach residents during emergencies. We are frustrated with the stench and the mosquito menace. The local corporator does not even visit our area.”

Forest department officer Shahnawaz, Mohammed Kunhi, Daidon D’Souza, and others were present.

Mangalore is supposed to be a smart city which is very difficult to accept as this drainage problem is almost everywhere. We pay tax to the municipal corporation and it is their duty to see that every area in Mangalore functions well. In front of my building too we face the same scenario, no proper drainage system, the dirty water flows throughout from the whole vicinity and the municipality corporation sents notices to us the residents staying here. What can we do? No way open for us. It is their duty to assist but all in vain as they don't seem to be interested. I feel that the people of Mangalore should come together to solve this issue or else this problem will be a permanent one with no solution.

Whole area, including Suvarna lane is also in the same pathetic condition. The concrete is laid in the beginning of the lane, from Fr Muller hospital and at the other mouth a bit near temple, Ujjodi. There is a drain it flows 365 days of the year. No official is interested in looking at the problem. What we hear there are regular bills raised against civil work done in this area. Thanks to our corporator.

Imagine if this is the fate of a Smart City and what about the rest? Tax money is in these drain worm politicians who have accumulated wealth in crores . Just check their net worth that has multiplied 10x in just few years. Civilians are being fooled and divided to fight amongst ourselves and stay distracted at all times. Public should unite and hold them accountable instead of lingering behind their power.

Residents of SL Mathias road also will Join in , there is a large storm water drain next to Blue Haven apartments where sewage is flowing. Inspite of repeated complaints the MCC has not taken any action. Repeated complaints to Our Corporator Rauf has not resulted in any action.

Drainage in Mangalore is a big joke. Manholes and piple lines have been erected more than 10 years back wihout been connected. In places where they are , they overflow , esp during monsoon times as they mix with the normal culvert. Corporators get elected, make enough money in their tenure so they do not have to work rest of their lives. Every Corporator has ended up with a buidling or complex in the name of their spouse.
