Kundapur, Dec 10: A number of grazing cattle have been eaten up by a leopard since the last some days in Madamakki and Bepde region in Madamakki gram panchayat of the taluk. This has worried the people, besides heaping on them huge losses.

On Thursday December 8 afternoon, two cows owned by Vishwanath Nakshatri from Bepde Hattoklu, which had been grazing, were killed by the leopard. Similarly, five more cows belonging to some locals including Ablakatte Hosmane Bhoja Shetty were eaten up by the feline during the last some days.

These cows were not insured, and the owners have lost their means of income besides suffering heavy losses. They have demanded the forest and revenue departments to pay them compensation for the loss. Forest officer of Hebri zone wildlife division, Lohit Kumar, visited the spot from where the cows became victims of the leopard, and held consultations with the concerned on the measures needed to rid the villagers of the menace, on Friday.
