Mangaluru: Scrapped vehicles pose crime risk; owners urged to cancel registration

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Nov 13: Selling old vehicles to scrap dealers can pose a risk, as these vehicles may be repaired and misused in crimes such as theft, looting, and drug transportation.

If a vehicle involved in such activities is traced back, the original owner may face legal action for failing to cancel its registration. The RTO has issued strict guidelines, requiring owners to obtain permission before scrapping their vehicles.

Owners must apply simultaneously for scrapping permission and RC cancellation. The AMVI will check for any pending fines, which must be cleared before the RC is cancelled. The RTO is working to raise awareness as the misuse of vehicles sold for scrap is on the rise.

There is also a risk that the engine and chassis of scrapped vehicles could be reused in other vehicles. If these vehicles are later involved in accidents or illegal activities, the original owner may be held accountable. Additionally, any traffic violations by these vehicles may result in fines sent to the original owner's address. To prevent these issues, vehicle owners are advised to inform the RTO before scrapping a vehicle and ensure that the RC cancellation is properly recorded on the Parivahan website.

It is always better to send your old vehicle to registered govt vehicle scrapping firm. Karnataka 's first scrapping centre has been established at Devanahalli, Mahindra Cero. The booking for scrapping has to be done through Parivahan app, the firm takes care of all documentation, moreover if veh is within the municipal limits of Bangalore, veh will be picked up by their agents free of cost. Compensation amount is received within 72 Hrs. This is a much better and greener initiative. I disposed off my old car , through Mahindra Cero.

Instead of creating awareness, first simplify the process of scrapping. Instead of wasting 5 days in the RTO office, it makes better sense to the vehicle owner to cut the chassis no identity on the car and sell it to any scrap dealer

Very True. Too many process involved. and for our bad luck, if the RTO is bangalore, then we cant do anything in Mangalore. The system is still not centralized .
