Mangaluru, Nov 14: The investigation into the tragic murder-suicide involving Karthik Bhat and his family from Pakshikere continues, with new details emerging about the deceased.

A cheating case has been filed against Karthik at the Suratkal police station by Mohammed, a resident who was an acquaintance of Karthik. The complaint alleges that Karthik, who was employed as a manager at a cooperative bank in Suratkal, defrauded Mohammed.

According to Mohammed, he had obtained a loan of three lakh rupees after pledging 10 sovereigns of gold at a finance company managed by Karthik. Mohammed claims that Karthik released the pledged gold within three months and deceived him.

Let us not forget that people befriend managers of cooperative society banks to get loans under dubious pretexts that which is not possible with nationalized banks. With Karthik (along with his family) gone, Muhammad's gold coins gone, there is only one collateral damage viz., the credibility of Cooperative society bank in Surathkal. I am sure, other customers of this bank must be checking if their collaterals or deposits are safe. Most importantly, just terminating an employee is not sufficient, the bank might want to put its procedures and process along with checks and balances in place.
