Bantwal, Nov 16: Veteran writer and “friend of children,” Muliya Shankar Bhat, has been appointed as the president for the 23rd Bantwal Taluk Kannada Literary Meet, set to be held at Manchi-Kolnadu Government High School. The announcement was made by Dr M P Srinath, president of the Dakshina Kannada District Kannada Sahitya Parishat.

At 72, Bhat, a retired teacher from Muliya near Alike, is celebrated for his extensive contributions to children’s literature, spirituality, and religious writings. Over his prolific career, he has authored more than 19 books, including works that are featured in the school curriculum in Kerala. He has previously served as the president for major literary events such as the 2002 Puttur Children’s Literature Meet and the 2006 Vitla Hobli Kannada Literary Meet.

Bhat’s literary influence extends beyond his books, as he has also chaired and been honored at various literary events, including the 2021 Taluk Gammaka Sammelana at Manchi. He remains an influential figure in Kannada and Tulu literary circles.

Muliya Shankar Bhat: A Brief Profile

Born on February 19, 1952, Muliya Shankar Bhat completed his education in Keddila, Muchirpadavu, and Kannyana before pursuing degrees in Sanskrit, Kannada, and Hindi. He retired after a long teaching career, having served as a Hindi teacher and principal at various schools, including the SAT School in Mangeshwar.

In addition to his teaching career, Bhat made his mark as a journalist, acting as assistant editor for Navabharat newspaper. He was also a key resource person for the Kerala State Textbook Writing Committee for over a decade.

Published Works and Recognition

Bhat’s literary portfolio spans across genres, with works such as Deshaprema Matthu Itara Kavanagalu (Patriotism and Other Poems), Chinnara Chilume (Children's Games), and Guru Charitramrutha (Biography of Saints). His 19 books cover a wide range, from children’s poetry to philosophical and religious writings.

His contribution to literature has earned him numerous awards, including the Poetry Kala Visharada in 1998, the Tulu Siri award in 2015, and the Yaksha Koustubha award in 2019.

Bhat continues to write actively, with several unpublished works, including plays, short poems, and dance dramas, awaiting release.
