Mangaluru-Udupi highway portion caves in amid heavy rains, major disaster averted

Mangaluru, Dec 3: The impact of the Tamil Nadu Fengal Cyclone has caused significant damage in Dakshina Kannada. Due to continuous rainfall, the Mangaluru-Udupi National Highway at Kulluru has caved in. It is alleged that this incident occurred because of road excavation work carried out by GAIL company.

The excavation work created a large pit, and the accumulated rainwater led to the collapse of the road in that area. The road gave way suddenly while bikes, cars, and trucks were passing, narrowly avoiding a major disaster.

Locals have raised concerns that, despite the collapse, heavy vehicles are still passing nearby, posing a risk of further road collapse.

The Fengal Cyclone has disrupted life across Dakshina Kannada, causing landslides and the collapse of retaining walls, creating obstacles for the public.

"Beside the road, there is ample space available for digging. However, GAIL chose to start excavation almost in the middle of the road without considering the potential damages. This road is the only National Highway connecting the northern region, and there is no alternative Bypass/ring road available. Greater caution should have been exercised by the concerned departments. Unfortunately, everyone remained silent, and now the road is on the verge of collapse." City has to wake up
