Beltangady, Dec 17: The non-renewal of contracts for KSRTC bus drivers attached to the Dharmasthala depot has caused significant disruption in bus services, leaving the public inconvenienced on Monday.

The contract period for drivers employed under Poojyaya and Pannaga contract companies ended on Sunday. On Monday, 72 contract drivers abstained from duty, impacting bus operations. Out of the 128 buses operating from the Dharmasthala depot, many services were either delayed or cancelled, particularly trips to distant rural areas.

The depot employs 136 driver-cum-conductors, 75 drivers, and 29 conductors. The absence of the contract drivers led to severe transportation issues for commuters, including passengers and students, and caused additional strain on depot officials.

According to depot authorities, efforts are underway to minimize passenger inconvenience by arranging alternative buses. However, some trips to rural areas have been cancelled, and measures are being taken to accommodate tourists arriving from other parts of the state.

Drivers expressed discontent over financial demands from the contracting companies. Many drivers have already deposited ?25,000 with their respective companies but are now being asked to pay an additional ?10,000 for contract renewal. They have also raised concerns over significant salary deductions and non-payment of promised amounts.

As Monday is a busy day for people traveling to and from Dharmasthala, Ujire, and Beltangady, the disruption caused widespread inconvenience. The contract renewal process is expected to take at least four days, prolonging the hardship for commuters.
