Udupi, Jan 3: Dr Santhosh Kumar, Byrampalli, panchayat member, addressing media in the press meet held on January 3, clarifies the issues surrounding the locking of Byrampalli grama panchayat (GP) office on January 1.

Santhosh Kumar said, “On January 1, staff locked the office and submitted collective resignations to avoid accountability. Investigations into irregularities and misuse of government funds are in progress. It is suspected that this act was a deliberate attempt to derail these investigations. The Panchayat office, which was supposed to open at 10 am on January 1, was delayed until 12 pm due to the president’s refusal to hand over the office keys. This caused inconvenience to the public. An honest Panchayat Development Officer (PDO), Sumana, was subjected to undue pressure and accusations to divert attention from the core issue of corruption.”

Santhosh Kumar highlighted that since the election, he has consistently raised concerns about corruption within the panchayat and said, “I have submitted the details of corruption that took place in Byrampalli grama panchayat. On March 15, 2024, I submitted a third formal complaint to higher authorities, resulting in an investigation. The investigation confirmed misappropriation of public funds involving former and current presidents, contractors, engineers, and other staff. The Panchayat staff, particularly some members, have demonstrated negligence and non-cooperation, impacting the public.”

Santhosh Kumar said, “Residents of Bairampalli have strongly opposed the reinstatement of negligent staff members who failed to perform their duties responsibly. Allegations of bribery and misuse of power have been made against some staff members.”

Santhosh commended PDO Sumana for her dedication and said, “PDO Sumana has been dedicated to her duties since her appointment 16 months ago. Under her leadership, over 1,022 files have been resolved promptly. Despite baseless accusations against her, her integrity has been proven repeatedly. A formal complaint has been submitted to the relevant authorities regarding the corruption and misuse of power. The responsible individuals, including past and current presidents, engineers, and staff, will face legal consequences for their actions.”

The press conference was attended by Byrampalli grama panchayat vice-president Ammani Shetty, members Vijay Kumar, Vijayashree Bhat, resident Anitha Poojary and Kavita Uday Poojary.

I am residing in bairampalli village. We are building new house in our land. So we need financial support from bank as loan. So we need some documents importantly 9 and 11 form and further building license. So we applied for that. But PDO not signing the document since 5 months. She is telling that nagara pradikara will make this document and I will give you building license. When we contact CEO of DC office udupi, they told 9 and 11 should made by panchayath office only.
